Mercedes-Benz Safety Features
Whether you're on the Baltimore-Harrisburg Expressway for hours every month or take regular trips to Butler's Orchard in Germantown or Patapsco Valley State Park, the entire team at Mercedes-Benz of Hunt Valley is here to make sure every mile you drive is exceptional. For decades, Mercedes-Benz has been at the forefront of innovation, especially in an area we deem most important: the safety of Mercedes-Benz drivers and their passengers.
The engineers at Mercedes-Benz devote countless hours to developing safety systems designed to reduce the severity of an accident, reduce the damage caused by an accident, and even reduce the chance an accident happens at all.
Because of these efforts, the suite of Mercedes-Benz safety features continues to expand and improve year after year.
What Are the Mercedes-Benz Safety Features?
With each new Mercedes-Benz designed, more safety innovations are added and current safety features are adapted and enhanced. Our vehicles are engineered to make an accident less severe, less damaging, and, most important, less likely to occur.Mercedes-Benz Safety Features for Accident Prevention
The first goal of vehicle safety is to avoid an accident altogether. The Mercedes-Benz accident prevention technologies continue to evolve and improve because our hope is that an accident never happens.Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC®
This adaptive cruise control system uses radar-based technology to monitor traffic flow. The system calculates the appropriate distance between your vehicle and the vehicles in front of you based on vehicle speed. If traffic on Jones Falls Expressway slows, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC® employs Active Brake Assist, adjusting vehicle speed to keep a safe distance. If traffic comes to a sudden stop, the system can bring your Mercedes-Benz to a complete halt.
When DISTRONIC adaptive cruise control is engaged, Active Steering Assist uses the same radar sensors to identify lane markings, guardrails, and other vehicles. Active Steering Assist helps you keep your Mercedes-Benz centered in its lane while cruising.
Active Blind Spot Assist
It's the biology of the eyeball that creates a zone in your field of vision where you are unable to detect objects. Even the rearview and side mirrors of a vehicle cannot accommodate this obstructed range. Active Blind Spot Assist is a Mercedes-Benz safety feature that picks up the slack.
When radar sensors detect vehicles in the blind spot on either side of your vehicle an icon flashes in the side mirror. If you engage your turn signal and a vehicle is detected in the blind spot, an audible warning tone sounds. If you begin a lane change, the Active Lane Keeping Assist system engages. Your steering wheel will vibrate, and the advanced safety technology helps guide the vehicle into the correct lane by selectively braking individual wheels.
ATTENTION ASSIST®
A notable example of Mercedes-Benz innovation, ATTENTION ASSIST® is the first driver assistance feature of its kind.
A trip to Ocean City is a long drive and, even surrounded by the comforts of a Mercedes-Benz, a driver can become fatigued. ATTENTION ASSIST® monitors up to 70 variables related to your specific driving style. The system tracks interactions with vehicle controls and steering corrections. If a driver exhibits signs of drowsiness or driver fatigue, audible alerts are triggered and visual alerts appear on the dashboard display.
Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
First introduced by Mercedes-Benz, this safety technology monitors vehicle motion and your specific inputs to aid you in driving in the right direction. This is especially valuable when cornering and during evasive maneuvers.
If ESP® detects wheelspin, severe understeer, or fishtailing, advanced braking technology applies brakes to individual wheels. This Mercedes-Benz safety feature even reduces engine power, helping keep the vehicle under control.
Night View Assist PLUS
A special camera teamed with infrared beams produces real-time views on dark roads. If a pedestrian is detected, Night View Assist PLUS points out and shines the headlamps toward the object it detects. Unlike thermal systems, the infrared beams sense cold objects, as well.
Mercedes-Benz Safety Features for Accident Mitigation
From cutting-edge advancements in occupant protection to the invention of the crumple zone, Mercedes-Benz safety features constantly raise the benchmark and set standards that all other manufacturers follow.PRE-SAFE® System
A Mercedes-Benz first, PRE-SAFE® makes potentially life-saving adjustments when it detects a collision or rollover is imminent. Upon anticipating an accident, the PRE-SAFE® System will:
- Tighten the front seat belts
- Adjust the front passenger seat
- Adjust headrests
- Close the windows and sunroof
- Activate PRE-SAFE® Sound: Newer Mercedes-Benz vehicles emit pink noise that pre-triggers the inner ear's natural reflex that shuts out loud noise.
- Initiate PRE-SAFE® Brake: Automatically applies about 40 percent braking power and initiates full emergency braking if the driver doesn't react.
If an accident is avoided, seat-belt tensioners relax. Occupants simply readjust their seats, then you can open the sunroof and continue on your way.
Evasive Steering Assist
If sensors detect a pedestrian in your path, this breakthrough system instantly activates as you make an evasive maneuver. The system calculates the steering force needed to execute the move. It then helps straighten the vehicle after the maneuver.
